Students lead eco-friendly diwali movement, persuading parents against crackers

This Diwali, the sound of fireworks was noticeably reduced in many neighborhoods, thanks to the efforts of students and teachers advocating for an eco-friendly celebration. Children, inspired by initiatives taken by schools and law enforcement, persuaded their parents to forgo the traditional crackers in favor of lights, food, and music. The Times of India has been highlighting the joint efforts of police and educational institutions in discouraging the use of crackers, emphasizing the adverse effects of illegal fireworks and promoting responsible citizenship.

A growing movement for an eco-friendly Diwali has been spearheaded by students who, after imbibing the message at schools, convinced their parents to abstain from bursting crackers. Residents like Palash Saha and Puja Sengupta shared their experiences of embracing alternative celebrations, opting for decorative lights, rangoli, and family gatherings. Schools across the city, guided by advisories from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board and law enforcement, encouraged students to refrain from illegal crackers.

Principals, like Sujoy Biswas of Rammohan Mission School and Rodney Borneo of St Augustine’s Day School, advocated for green firecrackers and eco-friendly festivities, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among the younger generation.
